I think Nanowrimo founder Chris Baty says in his book somewhere that it's inevitable - once you start writing your novel-in-a-month, things will blow up around you in an effort to distract you and pull you away from writing. Friends will pick that month to have a relationship meltdown, the car's transmission will fall out on the highway, etc etc.
No kidding.
My first weekend of Nanowrimo, which was going to be relatively quiet and relaxed, ended up being me gutting the kitchen sink and installing a new faucet. It was not planned. I was just fixing a dripping tap. It was going to take minutes. Instead, it took an afternoon and evening, and with the water still shut off Saturday night, we had to pack up our two kids and head to my in-laws' to have a "sleepover". I eventually got the sink figured out and fixed by noon on Sunday. Nice tap. No drips.
However, there was a whole lot of home improvement-related stress, including a moment of water spraying all over the kitchen ceiling, that has seriously cut into my writing time on the weekend.
Still not bad - as of this morning's bus commute into work, I'm sitting at 4,276 words. But that's a couple of thousand words off the pace, which I will have to get back at some point.
